Independence Day

"You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it!"
- John Adams

Tomorrow is the fourth of July, Independence Day for America. Many of us will be watching fireworks, eating hotdogs and hanging out with our friends and family. In the midst of the celebration, we should all remember the people who fought for our freedom in this life. The brave heroes of our country wanted to build a "city on a hill," where every man, woman and child could worship Christ, without the threat of persecution. They were willing to die, so that the future generations could have freedom.

We should also remember the One who fought for our eternal freedom.  Christ died for us, to free us from our sins, so that we may have eternal life.

For freedom Christ has set you free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
- Galatians 5:1 (ESV)

We should remember our temporary freedoms in this life, and never forget the eternal freedom that Christ has given us. But we shouldn't use it for our own selfish gain; we should use it wisely and for the glory of God. In the words of Francis Schaeffer, "Freedom is not having the right to choose to do whatever you want; freedom is having the ability to do what is right." We should pray that we use our freedom wisely, and use it with a loving heart.

For you were called to freedom... Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
-Gal. 5:13 (ESV)
